that strong masculine presence still lingered in the cabin, even with Dominick gone. His partner was nice, and I didn’t mind being around her, but it was a completely different feeling when I was. There was no challenge, no unexpected sexual rush. And although I hated to admit it, I missed him already.

I’d held onto Dominick too long before he left that day. Yes, I was upset, and it was nice of him to indulge me but holding him initially for comfort had begun to feel far too good. I hadn’t wanted to let go.

“Liz?” I asked as I helped her finish up the dishes. She’d brought groceries with her and made a fresh salad for supper with a really good lasagne.

She smiled at me. “Yeah?” “Is it possible to fall in love with someone at first sight?”

“I suppose.”

I fell quiet for a second or two, recalling that party, watching Dominick from the other room, and then waking him up in that bed.

“Calixto?”

“I just wondered. I mean, what if you see someone again, say a few years later, and the feeling comes back?”

She put down her towel. “Who are we talking about exactly?”

“N… no one.” I looked away. I shouldn’t have said anything.

“You’re not talking about Dominick?”

She didn’t laugh. She wasn’t making fun of me. In fact, she drew a little closer and touched my arm. “Are you?” She met my eyes.

“Maybe.”

“You met Dominick before?”

“I saw him briefly, a long time ago. He was with his ex. Ironically, I knew that ex.”

“Oh.”

“Does Dominick remember you from that time?”

I shook my head. “He wouldn’t have. He was kind of…of…out of it.”

“Oh. So, how did the two of you get on here at the cabin?” She went to take a seat at the table with her coffee mug. It was already getting dark.

“Okay, I guess. We squabble some, but…” I trailed off. “I know what you want.”

Liz leaned back in her chair, looking every bit the Federal Marshal suddenly. “Really? What?”

“Names of people George hung out with, criminals.”

“And you don’t want to tell us?”

“George is already in deep enough shit. If I was to…let’s say he could go to jail for a very long time.”

“And if he deserves to go to jail?” She eyed me.

“He’s my…my father. At least, the only one I’ve ever had. And don’t say it.” I held up a hand. “I know he hasn’t done right where I’m concerned, and I don’t want to be with him anymore. I want to be free, lead my own life…but on the other hand, I can’t bear to see

him rot in prison. He’s not healthy, and I don’t think he could…”

“Calixto.” She reached across and touched my hand. “I don’t think you can have it both ways. If George is free, he’s going to need you more than ever. He’s going to lose his assets. They’re being taken for back taxes, not to mention the money he owes to those he’s robbed. I don’t see him letting you go.”

I swallowed.
